Who We Are
About Us
Global Philanthropy Alliance seeks to develop partnerships between people in the United States and Africa, through mutual exchange of ideas and resources to support local organizations, empower youth, promote philanthropy, share knowledge and encourage innovation to achieve sustainable community development.
Our Priorities
Leading: Supporting those who lead by addressing social issues through innovation and empowerment.
Linking: Linking donors who want their contributions to make a difference, partners with technical expertise and local organizations who are creating change in their community.
Learning: Learning from our grantees and their work to share best practices and improve our grant-making.
Mission/Purpose
We believe in the power of people to change their circumstances through ideas, networks, partnerships, community action and learning. Our mission is to assist local organizations and social entrepreneurs in Africa to engage their communities to create positive and sustainable change. Often, these individuals and grassroots organizations have innovative solutions to address pressing issues in their community, but lack the financial resources or technical expertise to put a project in motion. By supporting social leaders in Africa, linking donors, partners and local organizations, and learning from grantee experiences and sharing that knowledge with others, GPA facilitates effective alliances that reduce poverty, empower youth and promote local philanthropy.
Core Values
- Nothing is greater than the power of people to effect change on their own behalf.
- Youth can be powerful drivers for leading their families and communities toward sustainable change.
- Effective and sustainable social change is created by or at least in partnership with the people most directly affected.
- Social entrepreneurs in developing countries have ideas, skills, and experience effecting change in their own communities. They often lack financial capital to accomplish their goals. Partnerships with those with money (and sometimes specific expertise) can make all the difference in achieving results.
- The power of donations of money (or time, or expertise) must be consciously balanced with structures that support and do not undermine the assets and efforts of the recipient.
- Effective partnerships involve mutual interest, mutual benefit, mutual respect, and mutual responsibility.
